Emergency HVAC Questions

Do you offer 24/7 emergency HVAC service?

Yes. Emergency HVAC service is available for situations that cannot reasonably wait for normal business hours.

What is considered an HVAC emergency?

An emergency can include situations such as complete loss of heat during dangerous cold weather, major cooling failure during extreme heat, electrical burning odors, smoke from HVAC equipment, significant refrigerant or water leakage, potentially unsafe heating operation, or a critical commercial HVAC failure.

My furnace stopped working in the middle of the night. Can you help?

Yes. Call our emergency line.

My boiler stopped working and the house is getting cold. What should I do?

Call us, especially when outdoor temperatures are low enough that freezing pipes or unsafe indoor temperatures could become a concern. Avoid repeatedly resetting equipment when you do not know why it shut down.

My HVAC system smells like it is burning. What should I do?

If you smell a strong electrical burning odor, see smoke, or believe there is an immediate fire or electrical danger, shut the equipment off if it can be done safely and contact the appropriate emergency service when necessary. After the immediate danger is addressed, an HVAC technician can inspect the system before it is placed back into operation.

Water is leaking from my air handler. Is that an emergency?

It depends on the amount of water and where it is going. Water leaking near ceilings, electrical equipment, finished areas, or locations where significant property damage may occur should be addressed quickly. Common HVAC-related causes can include condensate drain problems, frozen coils, drain pan issues, or other system faults.

Pricing & Estimates

How much does HVAC service cost?

The final cost depends on the equipment, problem, required diagnostic work, parts, labor, accessibility, and whether the work is performed during normal or emergency hours. We believe in explaining the problem and presenting pricing before proceeding with repair work whenever reasonably possible.

Do you provide upfront pricing?

Yes. Our goal is to explain what was found, what work is recommended, and the expected price before repair work begins.

Do you provide free estimates?

Free estimates or sizing assessments may be available for qualifying new equipment installations and replacement projects. Diagnostic or repair service is different from an installation estimate because troubleshooting an existing malfunctioning system requires technician time and testing. Contact us if you are unsure which appointment type applies to your situation.

Can you give an exact repair price over the phone?

Sometimes we can provide general information, but many HVAC failures cannot be priced accurately without diagnosis. Several different problems can create the same symptom. We would rather diagnose the actual problem than guess.

Will you repair the system without telling me the price?

Our goal is to obtain approval before performing additional repair work beyond the agreed diagnostic or service scope.

Do you offer financing?

Financing options for larger installations are being developed and may vary over time. Ask our team about currently available installation financing or promotional options when requesting a replacement estimate.

Residential HVAC

What residential HVAC systems do you service?

We service a wide variety of residential heating and cooling equipment, including central air conditioning systems, heat pumps, furnaces, boilers, ductless mini-splits, air handlers, condensers, thermostats, zone controls, ventilation systems, and related HVAC equipment.

Do you work in single-family homes?

Yes.

Do you work in condos and apartments?

Yes, subject to building access, building rules, system type, and any approvals required by the property owner or management.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes. Older homes are common throughout Putnam and Westchester County and can present unique challenges including limited duct space, older electrical systems, hydronic heating, boilers, additions, insulation issues, and unusual equipment configurations. Solutions depend on the property.

Air Conditioning

Do you repair central air conditioning systems?

Yes. We diagnose and repair central AC systems from many manufacturers.

What are common signs that my AC needs service?

Common signs include warm air from the vents, weak airflow, unusually long run times, frequent cycling, unusual noises, water around the air handler, ice on refrigerant lines, unexpectedly high utility bills, rooms that will not cool evenly, or an outdoor unit that will not start.

Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?

Possible causes include restricted airflow, dirty filters, dirty coils, refrigerant issues, electrical failures, thermostat problems, blower problems, condenser problems, or equipment that is unable to handle the current load. A proper diagnosis is needed before determining the correct repair.

Why is there ice on my AC?

Ice can develop because of insufficient airflow, refrigeration problems, a dirty evaporator coil, blower issues, or other system conditions. Continuing to operate a heavily frozen system can contribute to additional problems.

Why is water coming from my AC?

Air conditioning systems remove moisture from the indoor air. That water normally exits through the condensate drainage system. Leaks can occur from clogged drains, damaged pans, frozen coils thawing, improperly pitched drains, pump problems, or other drainage issues.

My AC keeps turning on and off. What does that mean?

Short cycling can be caused by control problems, electrical components, refrigerant conditions, airflow problems, thermostat placement, equipment sizing, safety controls, or other issues. Repeated short cycling should be diagnosed rather than ignored.

Do you recharge air conditioners with refrigerant?

Yes, when appropriate. However, refrigerant does not normally disappear simply because a system becomes older. A system that is significantly low may have a leak or another issue that should be evaluated. Adding refrigerant without understanding why the charge is low may only provide temporary relief.

Do you repair refrigerant leaks?

Yes. Leak diagnosis may require pressure testing, electronic leak detection, visual inspection, or additional testing depending on the equipment and condition.

Do you service older refrigerants?

Contact us with the equipment model, refrigerant type if known, and symptoms. Availability, cost, environmental requirements, and whether repair is economically sensible can vary significantly with older equipment.

Heat Pumps

Do you install and repair heat pumps?

Yes. We work with heat pump systems for both heating and cooling applications.

Can a heat pump heat my home in New York?

Modern heat pump technology can provide effective heating in New York when equipment is properly selected, sized, installed, and configured for the property. The best system depends on factors such as building heat loss, insulation, existing distribution system, electrical capacity, and the specific heat pump selected.

Can a heat pump replace both my furnace and air conditioner?

In some homes, yes. Other homes may benefit from a dual-fuel or hybrid approach. We evaluate the property and existing equipment before recommending a configuration.

Do heat pumps still need maintenance?

Yes. Heat pumps operate during both heating and cooling seasons, so regular inspection is important.

Why is my heat pump blowing air that does not feel very hot?

Heat pump supply air often feels different from the hotter air produced by a traditional furnace. However, if the home cannot maintain temperature, the unit runs continuously, backup heat operates excessively, or the system behaves differently than normal, service may be appropriate.

Furnaces & Hydronic Heating

Do you repair gas furnaces?

Yes.

Do you install furnaces?

Yes.

What furnace problems do you diagnose?

We can diagnose problems involving ignition, burners, blower motors, controls, thermostats, safety switches, airflow, electrical components, and other furnace systems.

Why does my furnace turn on and then shut off?

Possible causes include airflow restriction, flame-sensing issues, limit controls, ignition problems, overheating, thermostat problems, venting issues, or control faults. A technician should determine why the safety or control sequence is interrupting operation.

My furnace makes strange noises. Should I have it checked?

Yes, particularly when a new noise develops suddenly. Rattling, scraping, grinding, banging, buzzing, and repeated ignition noises can indicate different mechanical or electrical problems.

Do you work on boilers?

Yes. We service boiler-based heating systems.

Do you work on homes with baseboard heating?

Yes.

Do you work on radiator systems?

Yes.

My boiler is running but the house is still cold. What could be wrong?

Possible causes include circulation problems, zone valve issues, air in the system, pump problems, controls, improper pressure, thermostat issues, flow restrictions, or other boiler-system problems.

Do you provide boiler maintenance?

Yes. Preventive heating maintenance can help identify developing problems before the heating season places the system under full load.

When should I schedule heating maintenance?

Ideally before the system is heavily needed for winter. Late summer and fall are good times for preventive heating maintenance because problems can be identified before the first major cold spell.

Ductless Mini-Splits

Do you install ductless mini-splits?

Yes.

Are mini-splits good for homes without ductwork?

They can be an excellent option. Ductless systems are particularly useful for older homes, additions, converted spaces, individual zones, garages, finished basements, and properties where installing traditional ductwork would be difficult.

Do mini-splits provide both heating and cooling?

Many modern ductless heat pump systems provide both.

Do you service multi-zone mini-split systems?

Yes. Multi-zone systems can use one outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units.

How often should mini-splits be cleaned?

Filters should be maintained regularly, and deeper maintenance requirements depend on operating conditions. Homes with pets, heavy dust, high humidity, smoking, cooking contamination, or continuous operation may require more frequent cleaning.

Why does my mini-split smell?

Odors can result from contamination on filters, coils, blower wheels, drain pans, or other internal surfaces. A proper inspection can determine whether routine cleaning or a deeper cleaning is appropriate.

Thermostats & Controls

Do you install thermostats?

Yes.

Can you install a smart thermostat?

Yes, when the existing HVAC system and wiring are compatible.

Can every HVAC system use a smart thermostat?

No. Compatibility depends on the equipment, voltage, wiring, communicating controls, zoning system, and thermostat design.

My thermostat is blank. Does that mean the thermostat is bad?

Not necessarily. A blank thermostat can be caused by thermostat failure, loss of power, a tripped breaker, transformer problems, equipment safety switches, drain overflow protection, wiring issues, or other faults.

Do you work on HVAC zoning systems?

Yes. We can evaluate zone controls, thermostats, dampers, actuators, and related HVAC control components.

HVAC Maintenance & Tune-Ups

Why does HVAC equipment need maintenance?

Heating and cooling systems contain electrical components, motors, coils, drains, controls, filters, burners, refrigeration components, and safety devices. Preventive maintenance helps identify problems before they turn into larger failures and can help equipment operate more reliably.

How often should I maintain my HVAC system?

For a system providing both heating and cooling, seasonal inspection is commonly recommended. Many homeowners schedule cooling maintenance before summer and heating maintenance before winter.

What do you check during an HVAC maintenance visit?

The exact checklist depends on the equipment. Typical items may include electrical components and connections, capacitors, motors and amperage, condensate drainage, filters, coil condition, thermostat operation, refrigeration conditions where applicable, burners and ignition components on heating equipment, heat exchanger safety observations, and general system operation.

Do you replace filters during maintenance?

Filter service depends on the appointment and membership level. Platinum Comfort Membership customers receive qualifying standard filters as part of their membership benefits.

Does maintenance guarantee my system will never break?

No. Mechanical equipment can still fail. The purpose of maintenance is to improve reliability, identify developing problems, maintain safe operation, and reduce the likelihood of preventable failures.

Can maintenance help lower energy use?

A system operating with proper airflow, clean heat-transfer surfaces, correct controls, and properly functioning components can operate more efficiently than a neglected system. Actual energy savings depend on the condition of the equipment and property.

Indoor Air Quality

Do you offer indoor air quality services?

Yes.

What indoor air quality products do you work with?

Solutions may include improved filtration, air purification, UV equipment, humidity control, dehumidification, and ventilation improvements.

Can HVAC equipment help with humidity?

Yes. Cooling equipment naturally removes moisture while operating, and dedicated humidity-control equipment may be appropriate in certain properties.

Can you help with damp basements?

We can evaluate HVAC-related humidity and air-quality concerns and discuss options such as dehumidification, airflow, and appropriate HVAC improvements. The source of water intrusion or structural moisture may require another building specialist.

Can a better filter improve air quality?

Potentially. However, the filter must be compatible with the HVAC system. Installing an overly restrictive filter can negatively affect airflow if the system was not designed for it.

HVAC Installation & Replacement

Do you install complete HVAC systems?

Yes.

What types of systems do you install?

Installation options can include central air conditioning, heat pumps, air handlers, furnaces, boilers, ductless mini-splits, thermostats, zoning equipment, and associated HVAC components.

How do you determine what size HVAC system I need?

Proper equipment selection should consider more than square footage alone. Home size, insulation, windows, air leakage, ceiling height, orientation, ductwork, occupancy, existing heating system, and local climate can all affect system requirements.

Is bigger HVAC equipment better?

Not necessarily. Oversized equipment can create comfort, humidity, cycling, noise, and efficiency problems. Correct selection is more important than simply installing the largest unit available.

Can you replace only my outdoor unit?

Sometimes, but the indoor and outdoor equipment must be compatible. Efficiency ratings, refrigerant type, coil specifications, metering devices, controls, equipment certification, and manufacturer requirements all matter.

Can you reuse my existing ductwork?

Possibly. Existing ductwork should be evaluated for condition, size, airflow capacity, leakage, insulation, and whether it is appropriate for the new equipment.

Can you add AC to a house that has no ductwork?

Yes. Depending on the home, options may include adding conventional ductwork, using ductless mini-splits, installing a heat pump system, or designing another solution.

Do you install equipment in attics and basements?

Yes, where the application, access, structural conditions, electrical service, drainage, clearances, and code requirements allow.

How long does an HVAC installation take?

It depends on the project. A straightforward replacement may be completed much faster than a new installation involving ductwork, electrical changes, multiple zones, equipment relocation, or major system redesign. Your estimate should identify the expected project scope.

Will you remove my old equipment?

Removal and disposal can be included as part of replacement projects when specified in the estimate.

Do new HVAC systems come with warranties?

New equipment typically carries manufacturer warranty terms that vary by brand and model. Labor or workmanship coverage should be clearly identified in the proposal or service agreement for the specific project.

Repair Versus Replacement

How do I know whether to repair or replace my HVAC system?

We consider factors such as the age of the equipment, condition of major components, repair cost, reliability history, refrigerant type, efficiency, comfort problems, parts availability, expected remaining life, and the cost of replacement.

Will you automatically recommend replacement because my system is old?

No. Age is only one factor. If repair remains practical and economically reasonable, we can discuss that option.

What if I want a second opinion on an expensive HVAC repair?

You can schedule a diagnostic visit and provide any information you received from the previous contractor. We will evaluate the equipment and provide our findings.

Commercial HVAC

Do you provide commercial HVAC service?

Yes.

What types of businesses do you serve?

Our commercial services are designed for properties including offices, retail stores, restaurants and cafes, medical offices, warehouses, apartment buildings, and other commercial facilities.

What commercial equipment do you work on?

Commercial capabilities include rooftop equipment, packaged systems, larger-capacity HVAC systems, multi-zone systems, and VRF/VRV applications. Exact service capability depends on the specific equipment and project.

Do you provide commercial preventive maintenance?

Yes. Preventive maintenance agreements can be customized around the building, equipment inventory, operating schedule, and business needs.

Do you provide emergency commercial HVAC service?
